The theme in this poem is that Poe's sleeping lover, dreaming of his lover, has the power to kill the hounds of doubt. It is also an example of poetical realism. The phrase "as I would if it had the courage to face me in fair daylight" refers to whether or not "the thing" would have the courage to face Poe's lover in a fair fight.
